美式英语中afterwards和afterward都常用,但用afterward更普遍,和shortly连用时则要用afterwards。
afterwards的意思是“之后”,用于概括有先后时间顺序的一段时间,强调事件发生的先后顺序,一般不与表示具体时间的词连用,常修饰动态动词,多位于句首或句尾。
afterwards常指整个时间,常用在故事、童话中用以引出某种故事结局。
afterwards不用于比较等级。
