convene的基本含义是“召开,召集”,指把原本分散的人〔物〕集中起来。
convene既可作不及物动词,又可作及物动词。作及物动词时，其宾语可以是会议、比赛等名词,也可以是人。
用作不及物动词 (vi.) The tribunal will convene tomorrow.
法庭将于明日开庭。
The committee will convene at 11.30 next Thursday.
委员会将在下星期四上午 11:30 开会。
用作及物动词 (vt.) People were convened here for an emergency meeting.
人们被召集到这里举行紧急会议。
