counter的基本意思是“对抗”“反驳”,指对立面采取的行动或行为,虽未必存在敌意,但确实产生了冲突或处于紧张状态。
counter用作及物动词时,可接名词或名词从句作宾语。用作不及物动词时,常与介词with搭配,表示“还击”。
用作名词 (n.) He placed the money on the counter.
