Babies who use any gestures (手势) to counicate when they are 14 onths old have uch larger vocabularies when they start school than those who don’t,US researchers said.
They said babies with wealthier, bettereducated parents will probably sign ore. This ay help explain why soe children fro lowincoe failies perfor less well in school.
“When children enter school, there is a large difference in their vocabularies,”said the University of Chicago’s eredith Rowe, whose study appears in the journal Science.
Gestures could help explain the difference,Rowe told the Aerican Association for the Advanceent of Science yearly eeting in Chicago.
Vocabulary is an iportant predictor of school success.Earlier research showed that rich, educated parents tend to talk to their children ore than poorer, lesseducated ones.
“What we are doing here is asking:Does this socialeconoic situation relate to gestures? Can that explain soe of the difference we see at school entry (进入)?”Rowe said.
The researchers filed 50 Chicagoarea children and parents fro different econoic backgrounds and counted the nuber of gestures, such as pointing at a picture.
The tea found that 14ontholds fro highincoe, welleducated failies used gestures to express about 24 different eanings during 90 inutes.Children fro lowerincoe failies expressed 13 eanings.
When the sae children entered school at age four and a half, those fro higherincoe failies had better vocabulary scores on standardized tests.
“At 14 onths,an age when there aren’t even socialeconoic differences in their talk yet,we see there are differences in their gestures,”Rowe said.
The videos found that parents fro wealthier failies gestured ore with their children than the other parents.
Rowe said the findings suggest that gestures can at least partly explain vocabulary differences between the groups, and ay prove useful as the basis for interventions (干预).
“Can we control how uch parents and children gesture, and if so,will it increase their vocabulary?”Rowe asked.
