The world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, was opened with a grand fireworks ceremony, which was attended by some 6,000 guests.
During the ceremony, a screen displayed its exact height, which had previously been kept secret — 828m, far taller than the previous record holder, Taipei 101.
“We weren’t sure how high we could go,” said Bill Baker, the building’s structural engineer. He also said that the building’s design had unbelievable technical challenges because Dubai has high winds and is close to an area where earthquakes frequently happen. “It was kind of an exploration, a learning experience.”

With an increasing adoption of GM crops, the use of pest-control chemicals has been greatly reduced.
