Should ecigarettes (electronic cigarettes) be a new choice for the smokers trying to get rid of the habit? Reactions from Americans are mixed.More than half of the people questioned in a survey think ecigarettes should be controlled by the US Food and Drug Administration, but 47 percent believe the ecigarettes should be available to the smokers who want to quit.
“In the hunt for a safer cigarette, ecigarettes are becoming a popular choice among those either trying to quit or looking to replace standard tobacco smoke with an alternative that manufacturers claim to be safer,” Zogby International, which conducted the survey, said in a statement.
About half of the 4,611 adults who took part in the survey had heard about ecigarettes, which are batterypowered,or rechargeable cigarettes that vaporize a liquid nicotine solution. They do not produce smoke but a water vapor without smell.Sold mostly on the Internet, ecigarettes were first made in China.
Last year the World Health Organization (WHO) warned against using ecigarettes, saying there was no evidence to prove they were safe or helped smokers break the habit. The WHO said people who smoke ecigarettes breathe in a fine fog of nicotine into the lungs.
Nearly a third of people questioned in the survey think that ecigarettes should be allowed in places where smoking is forbidden, because they don’t produce smoke, but 46 percent disagree.Men who were aware of the availability of ecigarettes were more likely than women to say they should be a choice available to smokers who want to quit.Young people, aged 18-29,and singles were the groups most open to trying ecigarettes.Smoking is the single largest cause of preventable death worldwide, according to the WHO.

A.are much safer than common cigarettes
B.are popular among people who want to quit smoking
C.will take the place of traditional cigarettes
D.are produced in a safer way by manufacturers
3.What do we know about ecigarettes from the passage?
A.Most Americans are familiar with them.
B.They are a good choice as there is no nicotine.
C.They produce a water vapor that can’t be seen.
D.Most people buy them on the Internet.
4.What’s the attitude of the WHO towards ecigarettes?

In the past decade the popularity of rock climbing has greatly increased, and so has the number of injuries. It has been estimated that rock climbing is now enjoyed by more than 9 million people in the US each year.Study findings revealed a 65 percent increase in the number of patients that were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbingrelated injuries between 1991 and 2008.
The study, published in the online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, found that about 40,000 patients were treated in US emergency departments for rock climbingrelated injuries between 1991 and 2008.The most common types of rock climbingrelated injuries were fractures (骨折) and sprains (扭伤).The ankle was the most common body part to be injured (40 percent).Climbers in the study ranged in age from 2 to 74,with an average age of 26.The study also found that women took up a quarter of the injuries.
Falls were the primary reason for injury with over threequarters of the injuries occurring as the result of a fall. The severity of fallrelated injuries had a lot to do with the height of the fall.Patients who were injured after falling from a height over 20 feet were 10 times more likely to be treated than patients who were injured falling from 20 feet or lower.
“We found that the climbers who fell from heights higher than 20 feet took up 70 percent of the patients treated for a rock climbingrelated injury,” explained the study author Lara McKenzie,PhD,director at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Hospital.“This trend, combined with the fact that rock climbers have a higher hospitalization rate than other sports and recreational injuries, demonstrates the need to increase injury prevention efforts for climbers.”

Boys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any,and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do,in truth, though,no boy is an island;boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers (同龄人).
Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are.A recent study of 10to15yearold boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more fragile.Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.
Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”;they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together.Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court.Competence and skill are widely respected;being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt (萦绕心头) a boy for years.
As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls.During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life―and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”,someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

LONDON (Reuters)―New faces given to a Chinese man after a bear tore off part of his face and a FrenchCaribbean man disfigured by a rare tumor show that such transplants can work and are not medical oddities (怪异),researchers said.
The findings give hope to some people with severe facial disfigurement and suggest the transplants could prove longlasting without major problems.Despite the tissue rejection in the first year after their transplants, neither men had psychological problems accepting their new faces and have been able to rejoin society, they reported.
Only three people have received face transplants. The world’s first was carried out on French woman Isabelle Dinoire in November 2005 after she was disfigured in an attack by her dog.In 2007,her doctors reported that she had recovered slowly and steadily, overcoming two periods of rejection.
In 2006,Chinese doctors performed a face transplant on a 30yearold hit by a bear. While there were some complications with tissue rejection following the operation, two years later the man was doing well, his doctors said.“This case suggests that facial transplantation might be an option for restoring a severely disfigured face, and could enable patients to bring themselves back into society,” Shuzhong Guo and colleagues at Xijing Hospital in China wrote.
A French team described their work on a 29yearold man who suffered from Von Recklinghausen disease,an illness that changes the shape of his face.“The man,who was not named, was given a new nose, mouth and chin in a 2007 operation. He began to work 13 months after the transplant has more function in his face and has not rejected the new tissue,” his doctors said.
“Our case confirms that face transplantation is practical and effective for the correction of specific disfigurement,” Dr.Laurent Lantieri and colleagues at the HenriMondor hospital outside Paris wrote.

Many people may be surprised by the number of chemicals that they are exposed to through everyday household products.
In a study 25 women had their homes and bodies tested for 89 environmental pollutants―including pesticides (杀虫剂) and chemicals found in plastics and cleaning products. On average 20 chemicals were found on their bodies or in their homes.
Much is unknown about the possible health effects of chemicals in everyday household products. But certain chemicals―like phthalates (邻苯二甲酸盐) found in plastics―have been linked to potential health risks, including higher risks of certain cancers, though the evidence mainly comes from research on lab animals.Other household chemicals are known to harm the skin, eyes and airways―and may worsen asthma (哮喘).Many more chemicals found remain untested.
Chemicals likely come from a range of sources,so it is not always clear how to reduce people’s exposure, according to Dr.Rebecca Altman, the lead researcher on the new study.“However,” she said,“there are still measures people can take.”
In the original study, she noted, women were given advice based on the particular chemicals they were exposed to―such as using fragrancefree washing liquid and personalcare products.
For the current study,Altman and her colleagues interviewed two dozen women who’d taken part in the previous study to see how they would react to information about their household chemical exposures. They found that the women were generally surprised at the range of chemicals found in their homes and bodies. They were also surprised that even some banned things were found.www.
With many questions about the health effects of household chemicals unanswered, some experts worry that giving people information about their everyday exposures will cause unnecessary fear. However, the researchers found that the women in their study were typically not alarmed, and instead wanted “more rather than less” information on the issue.
1.Which of the following statements about chemicals in household products is TRUE?
A.Some of them have bad effects on health, while some have good effects.
B.Longterm exposure to them is certain to cause a deadly illness.
C.In the study it was found that certain chemicals can cause cancers.
D.It is uncertain what effects some chemicals have on health.

A.the passage running from your nose and throat to the lungs
B.things that look like fine threads growing in the body
C.the passage between rows of rooms in a building
D.the area just inside the front door of a building
3.According to Dr.Rebecca Altman,________.
A.women were more likely to be harmed by chemicals
B.fragrant products may contain harmful chemicals
C.it is unnecessary to inform people about the study results
D.further study on everyday products should be done immediately
4.What was the women’s attitude towards the study results?
A.They were angry that so many chemicals were found.
B.They refused to be subjects for the study any more.
C.They were afraid of getting bad news about their health.
D.They would like to know more related information.

With the Tesla Roadster and other plugin (插入式) electric vehicles hitting the road, demand is growing for accessible refueling points to recharge them.Carbon Day Automotive,a Chicagobased company, has now demonstrated a solarpowered recharging point, known as the Solar PlugIn Station, which lets motorists easily charge their cars using electricity that has been produced without any environmental damage.
The Solar PlugIn Station has gone on show in Chicago as part of the city’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.According to Carbon Day Automotive, the Solar PlugIn Station on show in Chicago is part of the vital infrastructure(基础设施) required for electric vehicles in Chicago and was the focus of a recent visit by the International Olympic Committee.
These solarpowered electricity points will be used daily to fuel the city’s electric vehicles with power from the sun.By producing the electricity from pollutionfree solar cell, the CO2 emissions are reduced to zero.
“Solar energy and electric vehicles are a partnership that is one more step to reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” says Richard Lowenthal,CEO of Coulomb Technologies.Coulomb Technologies recently developed the components (部件) required for individual recharging stations, marketed as ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations.Carbon Day Automotive is the Midwest distributor for the ChargePoint stations.
The Solar PlugIn Station consists of giant solar panels (电池板) that shade the tiny ChargePoint Networked Charging Station. The solar panel is connected to an underground battery pack, ready for everyday refueling.
“Without these stations it would be like driving around in a traditional car without the availability of gas stations,” says Scott Emalfarb,CEO at Carbon Day.“The day of true plugin electric vehicles will be here sooner than most people realize and the world needs to be ready to accommodate them.”

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable (无可取代的) sources of life and inspiration.Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals (大教堂) of Latin America make up our world’s heritage.
What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application.World Heritage sites belong to all the people of the world, regardless of the territory on which they are located.
The United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
UNESCO’s World Heritage mission is to:
encourage countries to sign the World Heritage Convention and to ensure the protection of their natural and cultural heritage;
encourage States Parties to the Convention to nominate sites within their national territory for inclusion on the World Heritage List;
encourage States Parties to establish management plans and set up reporting systems on the state of conservation of their World Heritage sites;
help States Parties safeguard World Heritage properties by providing technical assistance and professional training;
provide emergency assistance for World Heritage sites in immediate danger;support States Parties’ public awarenessbuilding activities for World Heritage conservation;
encourage participation of the local population in the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage;
encourage international cooperation in the conservation of our world’s cultural and natural heritage.

An accidental discovery has brought seismologists (地震学家) one step closer to being able to predict earthquakes. As part of an effort to measure underground changes caused by shifts in barometric pressure,a team of researchers found that increases in underground pressure came before earthquakes along California’s San Andreas Fault by as much as 10 hours. If followup tests confirm these findings, seismologists may eventually be able to provide a few hours’ notice for people to find a safe place before quakes.“Predicting earthquakes is the final goal for seismologists,” says Fenglin Niu,the research team’s lead author and a Rice University seismologist.“This is a start.”
The research team theorizes that the immense amount of pressure building along the Fault causes small cracks within the rock during the final hours before an earthquake, which increases rock density and slows the transmission signals.“The more cracks you have, the slower the seismic velocity (震波速度) will be,” says study coauthor Paul Silver,a geophysicist with the Carnegie Institution of Washington.Still unknown is whether there is any significance to the fact that the magnitude3 quake had a much longer preseismic signal than lowermagnitude quakes,or whether it was simply because its magnitude was larger and its epicenter (震中) was closer to the sensors.
If scientists can flesh out the new findings during future earthquakes―a twoyear study at the same seismically active location begins this September―it could form the basis of a vastly improved earlywarning system for quakes.Current earthquakewarning systems give just a few seconds’ notice because they detect only Pwaves, the fastmoving seismic waves that precede the more destructive waves released during a quake.Upgrading to a seismic stress meter, however,is still a long way off.
1.The author wrote this passage to tell us something about ________.
A.a traditional way of predicting earthquakes

D.is less accurate than the new one
3.The new way mentioned in the passage predicts earthquakes by ________.
A.measuring the changes of the Pwaves
B.looking for the epicenter closest to the sensors
C.watching the movements of rocks above the ground
D.measuring the pressure underneath the ground
4.Which of the following factors probably will NOT influence the preseismic signal?
A.The weather in the earthquake area.
B.The magnitude of the earthquake.
C.The position of the sensors.
D.The position of the epicenter.
5.According to the last paragraph,we learn that ______.
A.the new discovery will be put into use soon

The Amazon River carries rain and snowfall from high in the Andes Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean.Along its journey, the river has created a unique environment that serves people beyond the borders of Brazil. The Amazon River basin is possibly the earth’s most fragile and necessary ecosystem. The basin holds an astonishing 20 percent of the earth’s fresh water, more than the next six largest rivers combined. The flow of the Amazon is so powerful that it dilutes (冲淡) the salt water more than one hundred miles of beyond the coastline.
The Amazon River basin is a rainforest or jungle. It is home to a diversity of life forms found nowhere else on earth. The rainforest includes more than two million species of insects, one hundred thousand plants, two thousand species of fish and six hundred mammals. The basin also has huge reserves of rare metal. The flow of the Amazon River can also be harnessed to provide hydroelectric (水力发电的) power.Trees and vegetation in the basin help to balance CO2 and oxygen.Trees and vegetation use CO2 to make their food and release oxygen into the atmosphere.
The rainforest of the Amazon River basin provides a valuable resource to the entire planet, but it is being destroyed.People are moving into the Amazon basin and clearing the rainforest to build cities. The rainforest is often cleared to create land for feeding cattle. Finally, miners clear the land in order to get its minerals.
The deforestation (砍伐森林) of the Amazon basin may have long reaching effects. When the trees are removed,we reduce the amount of CO2 taken from the air. Some scientists predict that the buildup of CO2 will cause global warming. If the temperature of the earth rises, polar ice will melt, which will raise the level of the ocean and possibly, flood south Florida.

The amount of water in the world is finite (有限的).The number of people is growing fast and water use is growing even faster.Global water consumption rose six times between 1900 and 1995―more than double the rate of population growth.
As important as quantity is quality―with pollution increasing in some areas, the amount of usable water declines.
And the wider effects of water shortages are just as frightening as the prospect of having too little to drink.
Seventy percent of the water used worldwide is used for agriculture.Much more will be needed if we are to feed the world’s growing population. And consumption will rise further as more people expect Westernstyle lifestyles and diets―one kilogram of grainfed beef needs at least 15m3 of water, while a kilo of cereals (谷物) needs only up to 3m3.
New technology can help, however, especially by cleaning up pollution and so making more water usable, and in agriculture, where water use can be made far more efficient.Droughtresistant (抗旱的) plants can also help.
The optimists say “virtual water” may save the day―the water contained in crops which can be exported from waterrich countries to dry ones. But the amounts involved would be huge, and the energy needed to transport the water would be enormous.
In any case,it is not just us who need water, but every other species that shares the planet with us.We have to rethink how much water we really need if we are to learn how to share the earth’s supply. While dams and other largescale schemes play a big role worldwide, there is also a growing recognition of the value of using the water we already have more efficiently rather than harvesting ever more from our rivers. For millions of people around the world, getting it right is a matter of life and death.
1.Which of the following statements on water consumption is NOT true?
A.Agriculture consumes more than half of the water used in the world.
B.The growing population worsens the water shortage situation.
C.Lifestyles play an important role in water consumption.
D.The Western way of agriculture uses more water than the Asian way.
2.“Virtual water” refers to “the water that ________”.
A.is hidden in crops
B.is saved in agriculture
C.can be transported
D.can be reused with the aid of the Internet
3.In the last paragraph,the author mainly ________.
A.criticizes big projects such as dams
B.criticizes the use of river water
C.calls for the protection of other species
D.calls for the more efficient use of water
4.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Water is mainly wasted in agriculture.
B.Water pollution is threatening our health.
C.Shortage of water is a very serious problem.
D.Population growing influences water use.

The holiday shopping season is once again upon us.The super malls and smaller shopping centers will all be packed as hurried Americans search for the perfect gift. The crooks and thieves that prey upon innocent shoppers are well aware of this fact.
Even if you don’t involve yourself with holiday gift buying, you could end up a victim of theft.Thieves do not distinguish the holiday shopper from the everyday shopper.Thieves only know that there are more potential targets of opportunity this time of year.
They also know that many people are complacent (不以为然的) about personal safety issues year round. They’ll factor in the belief that many people take on added stress this time of year while running from store to store with so much to do and so little time to do it.Shoppers who might normally consider personal safety an afterthought push it back even further as they try to negotiate their way through the month of December.College students are not an exception to the rule!
As a member of our university community, you’re also easily influenced by the dangers of mall shopping this time of year.Take a minute and picture any of the local area malls.Close your eyes and think about the overflowing parking lots and the crowds moving around. The sights, sounds and distractions all can lull you into a state of personal safety complacency.
Aside from the shoplifters who steal merchandise from store shelves are the thieves who perpetrate (犯) snatch and grab crimes. And this is the sort of crime that you’re most vulnerable to,especially when you find yourself carrying a large number of shopping bags and packages. However,as is the case with most other types of criminal behavior, there are a number of crime prevention measures you can take to lessen or stop your chances of becoming a victim. So take the time to read and then put into practice the following holiday shopping tips.

2.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

3.Why is a person more likely to become a victim of theft during holiday shopping?
A.Because he often has much to buy.
B.Because he often does shopping in a hurry.
C.Because there are crowds of shoppers.
D.All of the above.
4.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To tell readers different kinds of crimes.

Plants that live in the rainforest have adapted in amazing ways to several very difficult conditions. This means that the plant has changed something in its “body” or “habits” to make it easier to survive in difficult conditions. There are several conditions they have had to adapt to.First, the soil of the forest floor is shallow. Also, the soil of the rainforest is not very rich,or easy to grow in.Next is the problem of very heavy rain which continues over a large part of the year. Finally, many plants of the rainforest are food for animals that live there.
The biggest problem that rainforest plants have to adapt to is the lack of sunlight in the rainforest’s lower levels.Plants have adapted to this problem in several ways. Many plants have very large leaves. The large leaf is helpful because it has a bigger surface area. The bigger surface area a leaf has,the more sunlight it can absorb. The canopy trees adapt by growing to be 100 feet tall so that their leaves can grab all available sunlight.Other plants called lianas (climbing woody vines) have adapted by rooting themselves in the soil of the forest floor and growing up the trees until they reach the canopy layer.Still other plants, such as epiphytes, have adapted by growing directly on the trees’ trunks and branches in the canopy and understory layers of the rainforest.
An adaptation to the large amounts of rainfall that many rainforest plants have is called “drip tips”.Their leaves are tapered (逐渐变细) to a sharp point at the end. This allows water to run off the leaf quickly. There are many other adaptations that rainforest plants have made to their environment. These will be discussed in detail,as we investigate the plants of the rainforest!

A.Changes in their “body” or “habits”.
B.Soil that is not very deep.
C.Epiphytes that grow on trees’ trunks.

2.How do lianas adapt to the environment in the rainforest?
A.They grow under big leaves for protection.
B.They rely on other plants to reach the canopy layer.
C.They change their leaf structure constantly.
D.They grow on other plants’ branches.
3.The underlined word “This” in Para.3 probably refers to ________.
A.the takein of sunlight
B.the large amounts of rainfall
C.the leaves’ having a sharp point at the end
D.water’s running off the leaves quickly
4.What can be inferred about rainforest plants?
A.They have to face dangers not only from animals but also from each other.
B.Too little sunlight and too much water are the biggest problems they face.
C.Different kinds of plants have different ways to absorb sunlight.
D.All of their adaptations have been investigated in detail.
5.What would be the best title of the passage?

When doctors urge overweight kids to pick up more activities, reading probably isn’t what they have in mind.Yet a new study by fatness researchers at Duke University finds that the simple act of reading―depending on the choice of material―can cause weight loss in teenage girls.
The study’s experimental group included 31 fat girls aged 9 to 13,who took part in the Healthy Lifestyles Program at Duke Children’s Hospital. The girls read a novel called Lake Rescue, whose protagonist (主人公) is an overweight teenager who struggles with low selfesteem, feelings of loneliness and teasing because of her size.A group of 33 girls read a different book called Charlotte in Paris, which did not have an overweight character, and another group of 17 girls read neither book.
At the end of the sixmonth experiment, all the girls who read books had lost weight, but the girls who read Lake Rescue lost more. They lowered their body mass index (BMI) by 0.71,compared with 0.33 in the Charlotte group,an average 0.05 increase among the nonreaders.
The idea behind the study, says Dr Sarah Armstrong, director of Healthy Lifestyles, was to find a way to encourage the girls without adopting the restrictive and often authoritative voice of so many other nutrition and diet programs.Lake Rescue was the perfect instrument, says Armstrong;it presents a likable character to whom the girls could relate and whom they could learn from.As the book progresses, its protagonist learns to make healthier lifestyle choices and finds an advisor to help keep her on track.Armstrong says,“She learns that she can become healthier, and the ‘I can do it’ feeling resonates (产生共鸣) with the teenage girls.”
