Imagine this situation: You go out to your backyard, and you see a bear smelling your rubbish bin. Or you go into your garage to get your bike and find a bear there. What should you do?
People in some parts of Florida think about these situations a lot. They have been running into black bears more and more often. This is frightening and
dangerous for both bears and people.
The number of cases of people and bears running into each other has gone up. In 1978, just one  case  was  reported.  In  2002,  1,340  cases  were  reported.  These  cases  are  called “conflicts” .Studies show that the number of conflicts in Florida is going up.
Some people think that human-bear conflicts are going up in Florida because there are more and more bears. Actually, it’s just the opposite. The number of bears is going down. In the early1900s, there were about 12,000 black bears in Florida. Today, no one is really sure how many  black  bears  are  left.  People  think  the  number  is  from  1,500  to  3,000.  So  why  are human-bear conflicts increasing so rapidly? There aren’t more bears, but there are more people. There are many people who want to protect the Florida black bear. Here are some of the things that people in Florida are doing:
Teaching school children about the Florida black bear with a special program that includes a slide-show, games, and activities.
Selecting carefully where roads are built or widened so that wild animals will not be harmed by the traffic.
Holding a yearly festival for families with arts, food, and information on the bear.

53. Why are human-bear conflicts going up in Florida?
A. Because there are more people.
B. Because the bears there are hungry.
C. Because people are doing harm to bears. D. Because the number of bears is going up.
54. How many black bears were living in Florida in the early 1900s?
A. About 1,340. B. About 1,500. C. About 3,000. D. About 12,000.

It was one o’clock in the morning when I at last succeeded in creating life.
As I looked at the lifeless human being, I saw one eye slowly open. Then he began  to  breathe  and  move  his  arms.  At  first,  I  thought  he  would  be  a fine-looking man. He had yellow skin, black hair and very white teeth. Unluckily, his eyes were watery, and his lips were thin and colorless. I soon realized that
there was nothing beautiful about him. I ran out of the room, disgusted (恶心) by
the creature I had created.
I tried to sleep, but for hours I could not. Then, when I did get to sleep, I had bad dreams. When I awoke the next morning, I did not want to return to my laboratory and the monster I had created. I went for a long walk until I came to an inn. There, to my pleasure and surprise, I found my friend, Henry Clerval. “Tell me about my family,” I asked him. “And

Elizabeth, How is she?”
“They are all well, Frankenstein,” he said. “But you do not look well, my friend. Your eyes look as if you have not slept for many weeks.”
I knew this was true. “I have been so busy,” I explained, “that I have been working without rest.”
Henry walked back with me to my department. I did not want him to, but I could not stop him. I was afraid that the creature I had left there might be alive and walking about. When we reached my apartment, I asked Henry to wait outside for a few minutes. I did not explain why. I slowly opened the door and entered the room. To my surprise, it was empty. The creature had gone. I was so overcome by the feeling that I fainted. I was ill for many months.
During my illness, Henry was my only nurse. He heard me talking in my sleep about a monster. At first, he thought I was just having a bad dream, but then he realized that something very bad happened in my life. At last, I began to get better.

第 II 卷(非选择题, 共 60 分)
B.  任务型阅读。(共 10,每 1 分,计 10 分) 阅读下列短文,根据短文内容完成表格中所缺信息,每空一词。
We can’t remember clearly when we started to take our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a  dish  comes,  instead  of  lifting  our  chopsticks,  we  take  out  our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or Wechat, waiting to be“liked”. Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to seewhetherwe get“liked”or not. We just cannot
leave our mobiles for only a meal.
Does that sound familiar to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?
A recent study suggests that what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food. As a result, it showed that the more photos they took, the less delicious the food seemed to them. So, why not stoptaking
photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?
Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control himself and check his mobile many times. “Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!”It seems that your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you

are with real people.
So, next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food.

On March 14, one of science’s brightest stars went dark. Stephen Hawking,
the world-famous British scientist, died at 76 in Cambridge, UK.
Hawking is considered by many to be the greatest scientist in history since
Albert Einstein. He came up with the theory that the universe began with the Big
Bang (大爆炸) and will end in black holes. His theories became the base for a
lot of later research. He also wrote books to help common people understand the universe. His most famous book is A Brief History of Time , which has sold more
than 10 million copies around the world.
Besides his scientific achievements, Hawking was also someone who had a strong will and optimistic attitude. When Hawking was 21, he was diagnosed (诊断) with a serious illness that
stopped him from walking and talking. Later in life, he had to sit in a wheelchair and “speak”
using a computerized voice. But this didn’t stop him from living a meaningful and colorful life. “If one is physically disabled, one cannot afford to be psychologically (心理上) disabled as
well,” he once said.
Hawking traveled around the world to attend science conferences, visiting every continent, including Antarctica(南极洲). He was also a fan of pop culture and appeared on TV shows such
as Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory.
He celebrated his 60th birthday by going up in a hot-air balloon; when he was 65, he took part in a zero-gravity flight to experience weightlessness. He hoped to travel into space one day. In 2018年, Hawking spoke about how he felt life was unfair when he was first diagnosed with his illness. “But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied with my life,” he said.
