1. 表示“独自”、“单独”，可用作形容词或副词。如：

He likes to be alone. 他喜欢独处。

He likes to live alone. 他喜欢独居。

注：在现代英语中，alone 有时也可表示“孤独的”，表示类似lonely 的意思。如：

He felt terribly alone when his wife left. 他妻子离去后他感到很孤独。

2. 通常不用 very 修饰，但可用 very much, all 修饰。如：

He went there all alone. 他独自一个去了那儿。

3. 用于名词或代词后，表示“仅仅”、“只有”。如：

The shoes alone cost $100. 光这双鞋就花了100美元。

I alone went there. 只有我去了那儿。

4. 用于 be alone in (doing) sth, 意为“唯一……”。如：

通常只用作副词，不用作形容词，主要用法有：

1. 强调“出声”，即把话说出来，而不是在心里默默地“说”，通常与动词 read, speak, think 等动词连用。如：

read aloud 朗读 think aloud 自言自语地说

2. 表示“大声地”，通常与动词 cry, laugh, shout, call 等动词连用，如：

The boy is crying aloud. 这男孩子在大声哭。

She called aloud for help. 她大声呼救。
