◆dress n. & v.

1. 用作名词，表示“衣服”，注意两种用法：

(1) 用作可数名词，主要指妇女穿的连衣裙或上下连身的女装，也可指小孩穿的衣服，但不指男人穿的衣服。如：

She makes all her own dresses. 她的连衣裙都是自己做的。

She was wearing a beautiful dress. 她当时穿着一身漂亮的衣服。

(2) 用作不可数名词，表示“衣服”的总称(不论男女)。如：

He doesn’t care much about dress. 他不太注意衣着。

注：在现代英语中，dress 用作不可数名词的用法已不常见。它主要用来指某些特殊种类的衣服(如礼服等)。如：evening dress(晚礼服)，full dress(大礼服)，national dress(民族服装)，fancy dress(化装服装)等

2. 用作动词，可以是不及物的，意为“穿衣”，也可以是及物的，意为“给……穿衣服”。用作及物动词时，其宾语通常只能是人，而不能是衣服。如：

Wait a minute, I’m dressing. 等一下，我在穿衣．

She dressed her children well. 她给孩子们穿得很好。

用于 be dressed in, 意为“穿……”。如：

The lady was dressed in white. 这位女士身穿白衣。

另外，dress 还通常用于被动语态。如：

The girl was poorly dressed. 这女孩衣着寒酸。

He was dressed as a woman. 他男扮女装。

◆drink n. & v.

1. 用作名词，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示“饮料”，尤其是表示饮料的一种、一杯、一份、一口等时，通常是可数名词。如：

I want a drink of water. 我想喝杯水。

He brought us two drinks. 他给我们端来了两杯饮料。

We have plenty of bottled drinks. 我们有大量的瓶装饮料。

Tea is a popular drink in this area. 茶是本地的大众饮料。

注：有时也用作不可数名词，泛指一般意义的“饮料”，尤其是用于 food and drink(饮食)这一搭配时。如：

Man must die without food and drink. 人无饮食必死。

There was lots of food and drink left over from theparty. 晚会过后剩下许多食物和饮料。

(2) 表示“饮酒”，通常是不可数名词。如：

He is too fond of drink. 他太喜欢饮酒。

He is a good husband except when he is in drink. 他不喝酒时是个好丈夫。

若表示喝一次酒、一杯酒、一种酒等，则可用作可数名词。如：

He became excited and talkative after two drinks. 两杯酒一下肚，他变得兴奋话多起来了。

2. 用作动词，表示“喝”，主要用于直接用口(不是用匙子)喝饮料(如 water, milk, beer, coffee, tea 等)的场合。如：

Babies drink milk. 婴儿喝牛奶。

Drink your coffee before it gets cold. 趁热把咖啡喝了。

I didn’t say anything. I went on drinking my tea. 我什么也没说，我继续喝我的茶。

汉语里的“喝酒”，在通常情况下英语一般只用 drink即可，而不必说成 drink wine。如：

He doesn’t smoke or drink. 他不抽烟也不喝酒。

You may drink, but don’t let the drink overcome you. 酒你可以喝，但不要醉倒。

3. 动词 drink 的过去式和过去分词分别是 drank和 drunk。如：

He drank two bottles of beer. 他喝了两瓶啤酒。

Someone has drunk my juice. 有人把我的果汁喝完了。

比较：drunk 与 drunken, 两者都可用作形容词，前者通常用作表语，后者通常用作定语。如：

He is blind [dead] drunk. 他已烂醉如泥。

There I met a drunken man. 在那儿我遇到一个醉汉。

The driver was fined for drunken driving. 这位司机因酒后开车而被罚款。
