◆everything pron.

1. 用作主语，谓语用单数；使用代词时，用 it。如：

Everything is ready, isn’t it? 一切都准备好了，是吗?

2. 与 not 连用，通常构成部分否定。如：

Everything hasn’t been stolen. 并非所有的东西都被盗了。

Everything he says is not true. 并非他说的一切都是对的。

3. 受形容词修饰时，形容词应后置。如：

There is everything wrong with this place. 这个地方全不对头了。

Everything useful should be kept. 每一件有用的东西都应该保存好。

◆everywhere adv.

1. 通常用作副词，不要在其前使用 in, at, to之类的介词。如：

I’ve looked everywhere for it. 我到处都找过它了。

He takes his dog with him everywhere.

注：有时根据需要可介词 from 连用。如：

Congratulations poured in from everywhere. 祝贺象潮水一样从四面八方涌来。

2. 有时可用作表语，表示某种情况很普遍。如：

Girls with long hair were everywhere in the 1960s. 在上个世纪六十年代女孩子留长发的现象相当普遍。

3. 有时用作名词(用作主语)或用作连词(引导状语从句)。如：

Everywhere seemed to be silent. 万籁俱寂。

The dog followed me everywhere I went. 无论我走到哪，这条狗就跟到哪。

◆examination n.

1. 表示“检查”，注意以下与动词和介词的常用搭配：

He made an examination of the room. 他检查了房间。

We carried out a medical examination. 我们进行了体格检查。

2. 表示具体的一次一次的“检查”或“考试”，它通常是可数名词，但有时表示抽象意义的检查或考试，则为不可数名词。如：

Admission to this school is by examination. 进入该校须经过考试。

On examination I found the goods of poor quality. 我一检查就发现了这些货物质量不行。 注：under examination 在检查中，在审查中。如：

The prisoner is still under examination (=being examined). 囚犯仍在受审。

3. 表示“考试”，还需注意以下几点:

(1) 表示参加考试，通常用动词 take, sit (for)，enter (for) 等；表示通过考试或考试及格，通常用动词 pass； 表示考试没通过或没及格，通常用动词 fail (in)。如：

About 500 students took [sat, sat for] the examination. 大约有五百学生参加了考试。

Of those who took the exam, only thirty percent passed. 参加考试的人中间，只有百分之三十的人通过了。

Both of them failed (in) the examination. 他们俩人考试都没有及格。

注：“参加考试”可用动词 take, 但不用 take part in。如：

不说：I didn’t take part in the exmination.

(2) 表示某一方面的考试，可直接用名词用定语，也可在其后接介词 in。如：a maths examination(数学考试)，an examination in chemistry(化学考试)

(3) “高考”或“大学入学考试”
