◆allow v.

1. 表示“允许”，通常为及物动词，其后可接名词、代词、动名词作宾语，但不能接不定式。如：

我们不许在池子里游泳。

正：We don’t allow swimming in the pool.

误：We don’t allow to swim in the pool.

注：allow 后虽然不能直接跟不定式作宾语，但可跟不定式的复合结构作宾语。如：

We don’t allow [permit] children to swim in the pool. 我们不许孩子们在池子里游泳。

2. 有时可接双宾语。如：

He didn’t allow her any freedom. 他不允许她有任何自由。

3. 有时用作不及物动词，其后通常接介词 of 或 for。如：

(1) allow of 容许。如：

The facts allow of only one explanation. 这些事实只能有一种解释。

(2) allow for 估计到，体谅。如：

We must allow for his youth. 我们必须要体谅他年轻。

Allowing for the train being late, we should be back by10. 30. 考虑到火车会晚点，我们最迟应该在10. 30前回来。
